My private equity wisdom was gained via a company I began in 2001 called Pure Barre. I started developing the product and brand with a single location and a few years later began licensing it out. In 2009 I converted to a franchise model. When I hit 100 locations with just myself and 2 employees, I decided it was time to sell a portion to private equity. Post-tansaction didn’t go as planned. Over the next five years the company went through 2 more sales. I left, later returned as Chief of Innovation and then made a final exit. Going “back in” was an excruciating process however one which provided immense wisdom few founders ever gain. Seeing what could have been done or should have been done differently before making my decision to bring PE in was monumental and I share all of these learnings here in this Guide Book.
