Eating a variety of different colored fruits and vegetables provides the most protection against disease and helps meet the body’s need for nutrients. At minimum, aim for 2 servings of fruits and 5 servings of vegetable varieties per day.
Here are 5 great reasons your mom was right and why you should make fruits and vegetables the central focus of your diet:
1) EAT YOUR VITAMINS & MINERALS
Fruits and vegetables contain the most vitamins and minerals over all other food groups. These include vitamin A, C, E, K and minerals, magnesium, zinc, phosphorous, folic acid, iron including trace minerals needed in small amounts.
2) EAT YOUR WAY TO GOOD HEALTH
Fruits and vegetables are low in calories, fat, salt and sugar. By making them the main ingredients on your plate, it will be easy to maintain a healthy body weight, lower your cholesterol, keep your blood pressure in check and get enough dietary fiber. Fiber, not only keeps you regular, but it also reduces your risk of colorectal cancer.
3) FEED YOUR ARMY OF DEFENSES
Fruit and vegetable consumption supports your body’s immune system making it an army of defense against the leading causes of disease. The phytochemicals and compounds of these plants contain biologically active substances that lower your risk of diabetes, stroke, heart disease and cancer.
4) EAT YOUR WAY TO YOUTHFULNESS
Fruits and vegetables contain natural anti-inflammatories helping you avoid pain and disease. Inflammation is the root cause of many of today’s diseases so by eating an abundance of these highly charged inflammation fighters, you can squeeze more enjoyment out of life and not worry about the impact of aging.
5) EAT BEAUTIFULLY
Fruits and vegetables are the two most colorful food groups. The rich variety of colors they provide is responsible for the antioxidants and phytonutrients they contain. Antioxidants fight free radicals that cause cell damage. By eating the rainbow of fruits and vegetables, you’ll be eating everything that keeps you beautiful. Not to mention the fact that fruits and vegetables are hydrating due to the amount of water they contain. And, we all know that hydration is key to glowing skin. Shine on.
Remember your mom’s words, eat your fruits and vegetables first and then, you can have dessert. Good advice. We should all thank our moms.
